MAGICS Talks 2026: AI in scientific and artistic research

Activity: Talk or presentation typesKeynote or plenary presentation

Description

MAGICS is the national infrastructure for human in the digital world, and a community built around six academic nodes across Finland: Aalto University, Tampere University, Uniarts, University of Lapland, Turku University of Applied Sciences, and University of Jyväskylä. MAGICS Talks 2026: AI in scientific and artistic research focused on the evolving relationship between digital technologies, human creativity, and data-driven understanding of our world.
Research Professor Arash Hajikhani and Research Scientist Richard Schmidt, both from VTT- Technical Research Center of Finland, were invited to share their insights on how data and artificial intelligence help us analyse innovation and technological change, and how the role of generative AI for science changes. In his talk: Signal in the Noise, Arash Hajikhani shared how LLM-generated content is beginning to distort our traditional ways of detecting nuance, relevance, and genuine signal. While it dramatically expands access and production of content, the explosion of non-validated AI-generated material online increasingly challenges our ability to decipher what is meaningful, original, and trustworthy knowledge - an important methodological challenge for science, innovation, and society more broadly. In the second talk, Richard Schmidt raised The Novelty Question: Can frontier AI be genuinely Novel? He explored this through the lens of recent scientific understanding of how LLMs actually work, along three novelty dimensions:  𝘦𝘱𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘮𝘪𝘤 𝘥𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘪𝘵𝘺 (how homogeneous AI-generated output tends to be), 𝘮𝘦𝘢𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘧𝘶𝘭 𝘦𝘹𝘱𝘭𝘰𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 (what it would take for LLMs to explore in a substantive sense), and 𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘤𝘩 𝘵𝘢𝘴𝘵𝘦 (the ability to develop relevance judgments for genuinely new ideas).
