Research interests

Hannu Karvonen works at VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland Ltd as a Senior Scientist and Project Manager (IPMA C).

Currently, he is involved in many drone-related projects, such as:
- FireMan (Unmanned aerial systems based solutions for real-time management of wildfires)
- Drolo (Business from urban airspace, www.drolo.fi)
- AiRMOUR (Sustainable air mobility in urban contexts via emergency and medical services, www.airmour.eu)

Hannu is also in charge of Stakeholder Interaction in FUAVE (Finnish UAV Ecosystem) and Vice President for the Finnish Chapter of the World UAV Federation.

With a professional background in human factors, usability, and user experience/interface/interaction R&D, Hannu has experience both from the academia and industry.

During his career, he has been previously involved in the development of various automated systems ranging from autonomous ship and metro systems to remotely operated industrial robots and container cranes.

His educational background includes a doctor's degree in cognitive science and a master's degree in information systems. At VTT, Hannu has gained a strong domain competence, for example, from:
- Unmanned aviation (UAV, UAS, C-UAV, C-UAS, drones, drone swarms, U-space, etc.),
- Marine and port applications (Ship command bridges, search & rescue and automated port equipment),
- Road and rail traffic (Automated road and rail systems)
- Process industry (Nuclear power), and
- ICT (Safety-critical software)

- Concepts of Operations development for complex socio-technical systems
