CURRENT WORK
At VTT, Dr. Hannu Karvonen is currently involved in many drone-related projects, such as:
- FireMan (Unmanned aerial systems based solutions for real-time management of wildfires)
- Drolo II (Autonomous intelligent multi-purpose drone-enabled business in low level airspace)
- AIMO (Innovative Air Mobility as Operator Business)
Dr. Karvonen is also in charge of stakeholder interaction in the Finnish UAV Ecosystem (FUAVE) and a Vice President for the Finnish Chapter of the World UAV Federation.
BACKGROUND
With a professional background of 20 years in human factors, usability, and user experience/interface/interaction R&D, Dr. Karvonen has work experience both from the academia and industry.
During his career, Dr. Karvonen have been previously involved in the research and development of many automated systems ranging from semi-autonomous ship and metro solutions to remotely operated industrial robots and container cranes.
His educational background includes a doctoral degree in cognitive science and a master's degree in information systems science.
At VTT, Dr. Karvonen has gained a strong domain competence, for example, from:
- Unmanned aviation (UAV, UAS, C-UAV, C-UAS, drones, drone swarms, U-space, etc.)
- Marine and port applications (ship command bridges, search & rescue and automated port equipment)
- Road and rail traffic (automated road and rail systems)
