Jarmo Alanen: M.Sc. from Tampere University of Technology in 1986. Jarmo has been working in Hollming ltd. Electronics from 1985 to 1989 on embedded electronics for marine research vessels. Starting from 1990, he has been working as a Research Scientist (and later Senior Scientist) at VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland.

Jarmo has conducted research on distributed control systems of mobile machines, especially on digital communication buses of machines and on dependability, diagnostics and safety of machine control systems. During recent years, he has carried out research in the area of Systems Engineering (including requirements engineering) both in machinery and nuclear sector. He has worked in close cooperation with industrial companies. He has published several articles and research notes on machine automation, machinery safety and Systems engineering. His main expertise include:

Distributed control systems of vehicles and mobile machines, especially Controller Area Network (CAN) systems Embedded real-time systems in general Dependability of electronics Safety analysis of machine control system Safety of communications of machine control systems Diagnostics of control systems Hardware-In-the-Loop systems Systems Engineering methodology and tools (including Requirements Engineering).Model-Based Systems Engineering (including model-based conformity assessment). Jarmo has been involved in control system development projects of  Finnish work machine manufacturers, such as John Deere Forestry (former Timberjack), Metso Minerals and Sandvik Mining and Construction. Jarmo has also carried out several safety analyses of machinery control systems for the off-road work machines manufacturers. He has been creating systems, safety and requirements engineering tools, methods and platforms for the work machine manufacturers and their control system providers and for nuclear companies.

Jarmo has been involved in several ITER projects relating to the engineering of Remote Handling Control System of the RH Devices of the ITER Tokamak reactor. Jarmo has also been involved in the Finnish national SAFIR fission nuclear programme. His focus there has been instrumentation and control (I&C) systems of nuclear power plants.
