Personal profile

Short bio

Dr. Jorg de Ruijter is a Research Team Leader at VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, where he leads the Production Host Engineering team. With a strong background in metabolic engineering and industrial biotechnology, his work focuses on developing and optimizing microbial production platforms — particularly yeast and fungal hosts — to enable the sustainable and efficient production of a wide range  of biochemicals, biomolecules, and bio-based materials.

Jorg holds a PhD in Microbial biotechnology and has over 10 years of experience in synthetic biology, metabolic engineering, recombinant protein production, and microbial strain development. His expertise lies in engineering yeast cellular machinery for enhanced product yields, stress tolerance, and secretion capacity, with a special interest in reducing metabolic burden and improving scalability for industrial applications.

Research interests

My background is as an experienced Research Scientist in the field of metabolic engineering. Mainly working with yeast to produce a wide range of compounds: colorants, flavour molecules, polymers, proteins, and so on. Experienced in all parts of projects, grant writing, project planning, lab work, analysis, write-up and dissemination.
