Short bio

During his career at VTT since 1987, Jouko Heikkilä’s research has concerned identification and management of challenges especially from the sociotechnical and systemic viewpoints and also in the framework of application new technologies and organisational changes. He has both developed and used methods and tools for the above mentioned purposes.

He has done both the research work and given support for operations development in companies and other organisations. The support for companies has included production of guidelines, training, seminars, interviews, surveys and workshops. 

Safety has been in his focus from the beginning. Since 2016, the main focus of his work has been on different aspects of circular economy including recycling, resource sharing, remanufacturing, product as a service models and procuct data in circular economy.  

His research has been carried out in the context various industries including chemicals, oil refining, pulp and paper, metals, machinery, ICT, textile, energy, construction, road traffic, railways, health care, and public authorities. He has participated in various national and international research projects as well as practical customer work on his field. He has worked as a project manager as well as a researcher and expert.
