Research interests

Research Team Leader for 5G and Beyond Network reasearch at VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland Ltd. Manager, researcher and geek. I have backround on theoretical physics but since late 90's performed a live migration to information and communication technology research. I have been with VTT since 1998 and my research topics have varied from distributed computing and lowly parallel cluster computing to network and link layer mechanisms (e.g. 3GPP NAS and AS, Ethernet, IP networks). Currently my main focus is on autonomic and cognitive network management (applying A.I. for communication networks) and network resource optimisation for next generation mobile networks and Internet, including architecture, distributed mobile edge computing, IoT/M2M, software networking and lightweight virtualization. The main focus and interests is especially in multimedia communications. From research point of view my ambitions have been to look also beyond status quo.

Expertise area

During my career at VTT, I have participated in several international research projects in various roles, such as IST WIND-FLEX, IST FutureHome, IST PHOENIX (WP leader), IST BIONETS (WP leader), IST WEIRD (debuty Technical Manager), IST 4WARD, ICT UNIVERSELF, ICT FIT4Green etc. and as a debuty coordinator for H2020 5G-ENSURE as well as in national funded projects such as Tekes WISEciti and ICT SHOK Future Internet and DIGILE IoT. TPC in various conferences and workshops, reviewer in multimedia communication journals, journal guest-editor (MTAP), organizing committee member: General Chair MobiMedia 2008, Publication Chair MobiMedia 2009, Co-Chair EUMOB2009, Chair E2DC 2012, etc.

I have participated and contributed on several EU and national roadmap and whitepaper work groups on mobile network technologies and content distribution as well as research program preparations (e.g. H2020 5G PPP program, Digile/Tivit Future Internet, Digile IoT etc.), currently I am also participating in 5G IA and 5G Trials Roadmap work and acting as vice-chair for Networld2020 European Technology Platform's Expert Advisor Group.
