Personal profile

Short bio

Dr Tomomi Kito is a senior scientist with a wide range of research interests and experience. Tomomi received her PhD degree from the University of Tokyo in the field of artificial intelligence. Then she did a postdoctoral fellowship at the Saïd Business School, Oxford University in the UK, where she became more interested in analysing empirical data and developing realistic models of real-world business systems. After that, she has been on the faculty of Japanese universities (2012-: University of Tokyo, 2015-: Tsukuba University, 2018-: Waseda University)and leading her own research groups.

Tomomi's interest covers a broad range of scientific phenomena across many fields. In general, her research takes a mathematical/computational approach to real-world problems. More specifically, she has dealt with issues related to systems engineering, socioeconomic systems (e.g., innovation ecosystems), and business administration/management (primarily supply chain management, corporate strategies, organisational design, innovation management and so on).
As for methodologies, she has knowledge and skills in systems theory, simulation (especially multi-agent simulation), complex network science, and big data analysis.

Throughout her career, Tomomi has been consistently interested in complex relationships among diverse individuals and how "value" (= useful functions, new ideas, etc.) emerges from these relationships for the system as a whole.
