AI Powered Autonomous Control for Working Machinery

Project: Business Finland project

Project Details

Description

AI Powered Autonomous Control for Working Machinery (AI4Machinery) is a collaborative project between Finnish companies and research institutions, aimed at developing Al-powered autonomous control systems for heavy machinery used in industries such as construction, forestry, and mining. The project focuses on improving the efficiency, safety, and sustainability of machines operating in demanding environments like mines, forests, and infrastructure construction sites. Artificial intelligence is utilized for machine perception, control, and decision-making, enabling more autonomous and efficient operations. Additionally, the project develops autonomous machine swarms that can coordinate and collaborate on industrial sites. The project also aims to enhance work safety and cybersecurity through Al-driven solutions, while using AI in the simulation and planning of machines and worksites to optimize resource usage and reduce environmental impact. The project brings together leading Finnish technology companies, including Technion, Normet, Infrakit, and Destia, along with research institutions like the University of Oulu and VTT. Together, they are developing new technologies that aim to revolutionize the use of autonomous machinery and machine swarms across various industrial sectors.

In the project, VTT is targeting Shared Autonomous and Supervised (manual) control, where situational awareness lays the basis for reliable machine operations. VTT will participate in the development of the autonomous forestry machine as well as the autonomous breaker boom system and has the focus in utilization and integration of 3D machine vision technologies, kinematic boom control and advanced remote operation technologies.
