Bio-based materials and hybrid structural solutions for renovation

The vision of the BioReno Co-research project is to create opportunities for Finnish companies by developing high-performance bio-based materials and hybrid structure solutions with low environmental impact for renovation. The main objective of the project is to develop new bio-based and low-carbon construction products for the retrofit of ventilated roofs and external walls. More specifically, the aim is to combine the latest scientific expertise of three research institutes (TAU, XAMK and VTT) to develop and demonstrate sustainable, moisture and fire safe as well as cost-effective additional thermal insulation solutions for renovation with bio-based and natural materials. The aim of this development is to increase the opportunities for participating companies to enter the fast-growing sustainable renovation market through a new innovative concept.

The BioReno consortium includes TAU Civil Engineering/Building Physics, XAMK Fiber Laboratory/Wood Construction Laboratory and VTT Biobased materials processing and products scientists as well as a strong value chain of 20 Finnish companies. In addition, this joint project will carry out several international researcher visits with leading research organisations. BioReno is the first large-scale project in Finland to study the use of bio-based and low-carbon building materials in renovation. The study covers all stages of the construction process and works closely with leading organisations in the field.

The global renovation market potential is expected to develop with a focus on sustainability and energy efficiency as consumers become more environmentally aware and environmental topics are included more tightly in the regulations. Thus, new innovations in materials and construction technology also play a crucial role in shaping the future of the renovation industry. The solutions developed in BioReno offer great business opportunities for the companies involved in this rapidly growing market.
