Project Details
Description
Industrial bioprocess industry is considered to be one key enabler of the green transition. However, as of now the industry suffers from low digitalization, automation and control possibilities. In order to increase efficiency and competitiveness of industrial biotechnology, innovative methods are needed to monitor, model, optimize and control the processes with process analytic and automation tools.
Finland is an internationally recognized forerunner in synthetic biology and industrial biotechnology. The BIOND project will ensure that Finland can maintain and expand this leading role and create business opportunities for Finnish companies in digitalisation of bioproduction by rendering more and more processes profitable, as well as creating export potential to Europe and beyond.
In the BIOND project, VTT will work together with the consortium to develop and apply monitoring approaches for microbial bioprocesses, e.g. through Raman spectroscopy and online microscopy, to establish their suitability to measure key parameters in biocultivation processes. Data analysis with the help of machine learning will establish robust calibration methods. Creating process models of the fermentation system provides a prerequisite for digital twinning and therefore automation of the bioproduction processes.
