DIANA 6G Technology Centre Development project

Project: EU project

Project Details

Description

DIANA (Defence Innovation Accelerator for the North Atlantic) is an initiative by NATO aimed at expediting defence sector innovations and technological advancements. DIANA seeks to bring together experts from the defence forces, academic world, and the private sector to create and develop new technologies that can support the defence and security needs of NATO member countries.

The project particularly focuses on innovation in the fields of information technology, artificial intelligence, biotechnology, and other rapidly developing scientific areas. DIANA's objective is also to facilitate the integration of new technologies into the armed forces of NATO member states, thereby enhancing the alliance's collective defence capabilities.

In the NATO DIANA 6G Technology Centre project, the capabilities of both the University of Oulu and VTT in the defence sector are strengthened to apply 6G technology research to the defence sector. Additionally, it promotes the establishment of the University of Oulu and VTT's DIANA 6G test centres.

The 6G Test Center (6GTC), intended to leverage, in part, the 5G/6G test network of the University of Oulu and VTT (5/6GTN), is a state-of-the-art telecommunications research and service center to be developed in collaboration between the University of Oulu (UOULU) and VTT. 6GTC offers a comprehensive range of top-notch facilities, services, and processes. By maintaining strategic partnerships with local organizations and companies such as Business Oulu, Nokia, Bittium, KNL, Verkotan, Patria, Airbus, EXFO, Mediatek, Conlog, Noptel, Probot, 6GTC serves as a global testing hub. It is uniquely positioned to meet the needs of DIANA partners and the broader ecosystem, aligning with NATO's evolving global requirements.

The project consists of the following work packages:
Work Package 1: Project Communication
This section focuses on effective communication, emphasizing the role of communication in sharing the project's goals and results.

Work Package 2: Diana 6G Test Centre & Development
This section focuses on building and maintaining the 6G test center's radio and core networks, computing capabilities and other functions to meet NATO and defence sector requirements, thereby offering necessary services to test, showcase, and validate technological solutions that implement 5G/6G. The development work also includes the planning the necessary security-related updates, including plans for investments in both 5G/6G technology and aspects such as server room security and classifications and equipment placement.

Work Package 3: NATO DIANA and Défense Sector Vertical Networks and ecosystem
In this work package, the focus is on connecting with NATO and national EDF networks and coordinating the activities of the defence sector ecosystem and Partnership. The goal is to provide the capabilities and technology of the University of Oulu and VTT. 6G Test Centres for NATO and defence sector research and development projects. The University of Oulu and VTT, organize various meetings and events for network members and participate in necessary EU coordination efforts.
EDF stands for the European Defence Fund, which aims to strengthen European defense cooperation and competitiveness by funding joint defense research and development. It seeks to promote collaboration, innovation, and joint projects among member states to enhance the EU's security and defense capabilities.

Work Package 4: Project Management
This involves coordinating the implementation of project content, reporting, managing payments, organizing meetings, liaising with the funder, as well as competitive procurement and monitoring of purchased services
