Description
DIANA (Defence Innovation Accelerator for the North Atlantic) is an initiative by NATO aimed at expediting defence sector innovations and technological advancements. DIANA seeks to bring together experts from the defence forces, academic world, and the private sector to create and develop new technologies that can support the defence and security needs of NATO member countries.
The project particularly focuses on innovation in the fields of information technology, artificial intelligence, biotechnology, and other rapidly developing scientific areas. DIANA's objective is also to facilitate the integration of new technologies into the armed forces of NATO member states, thereby enhancing the alliance's collective defence capabilities.
In the NATO DIANA 6G Technology Centre project, the capabilities of both the University of Oulu and VTT in the defence sector are strengthened to apply 6G technology research to the defence sector. Additionally, it promotes the establishment of the University of Oulu and VTT's DIANA 6G test centres.
The 6G Test Center (6GTC), intended to leverage, in part, the 5G/6G test network of the University of Oulu and VTT (5/6GTN), is a state-of-the-art telecommunications research and service center to be developed in collaboration between the University of Oulu (UOULU) and VTT. 6GTC offers a comprehensive range of top-notch facilities, services, and processes. By maintaining strategic partnerships with local organizations and companies such as Business Oulu, Nokia, Bittium, KNL, Verkotan, Patria, Airbus, EXFO, Mediatek, Conlog, Noptel, Probot, 6GTC serves as a global testing hub. It is uniquely positioned to meet the needs of DIANA partners and the broader ecosystem, aligning with NATO's evolving global requirements.
The project consists of the following work packages:
In the DIANA 6G Test Center investment project, machine and equipment investments related to the development of future communication technologies will be implemented, purchase services related to the development of R&D facilities will be acquired, and project management will be implemented, enabling the start of NATO DIANA 6G Test Center operations. The project is linked to the 6GTC development project, which is used to develop test center operations and related cooperation.
WP1/Equipment purchase - investments
WP2/Installation work and development of server room premises - subcontract work
WP3/Project management - project management, reporting, linking to the 6GTC development project
