European Metrology Programme for Innovation and Research (EMPIR)

Project: EU project

Project Details

The European Metrology Programme for Innovationand Research (EMPIR) coordinates research projects to address grand challenges, while supporting and developing the SI system of measurement units. There is anincreased focus within EMPIR on innovation activities to target the needs ofindustry and accelerate the uptake of research outputs. The programme'scapacity-building projects aim to bridge the gap between EU member states withemerging measurement systems and those with more developed capabilities.

The EMPIR programme enables European metrologyinstitutes, industrial and medical organisations, and academia to collaborateon a wide variety of joint research projects within specified fields:industry, energy, environment, health, SI Fundamental, Normative, ResearchPotential, and Support for Networks and Support for Impact projects. AnnualEMPIR research calls between 2014 and 2020 are supported by 600 M€ of EuropeanUnion funding enable project research for a maximum of 3 years (5 years forSupport for Networks).

VTT MIKES coordinates Finland’s participation inthe EMPIR programme.

The EMPIR initiative is co-funded by the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovative programme and the EMPIR Participating States.
