Fully cellulose-based solutions for industrial applications

Project: Business Finland project

Project Details

Description

The Challenge: Our planet groans under the weight of packaging waste, largely plastic, harming the environment and our economies. Recycling is difficult due to complex multilayer designs.

The Opportunity: FullCell research project seeks a solution by developing sustainable packaging materials from Finland's abundant wood resources. The project offers numerous benefits:

Environmental: Reduce reliance on fossil-fuel based plastics and complex, unrecyclable packaging.

Economic: Create a new and growing global market for Finnish bio-based packaging solutions.

Business: Finnish companies gain valuable expertise, becoming leaders in sustainable packaging production.

The Plan: Build a consortium of Finnish companies to develop and manufacture these new materials. Develop scalable technologies for producing high-performance, recyclable cellulose-based films and coatings. Leverage existing expertise at VTT and LUT research institutions for material development and conversion.

The Finnish Advantage: Finland's strong forest sector provides a sustainable source of raw materials. The targets of FullCell aligns with Finland's bioeconomy strategy, potentially doubling forest sector exports. FullCell concept has the potential to revolutionize the packaging industry, positioning Finland as a global leader in sustainable packaging solutions.
