The overarching objective of the HEROES project is to develop and demonstrate hydrogen production technology with the world’s highest net-efficiency of 85%, improving Finland's expertise and competitiveness in advanced electrolysis incorporated with cutting-edge heat integration systems. It will provide solutions for harnessing and using heat losses from the entire hydrogen production value chain, including the solid oxide electrolyser (SOC), transformers, AC/DC converters, heat pumps and gas compressors.

HEROES represents a significant advancement for the hydrogen industry. It is a pioneer in validating and realising innovative concepts for enhancing the interface between SOC systems and other electronic systems to maximise the efficiency and the durability of the complete H2 production chain. It also provides companies with expertise in cost-effectiveness, business modelling, and SOC -power grid interface.

VTT coordinates this HEROES project. VTT has been working with SOC technology since 1998 and has participated in many research, development and demonstration projects, both commercial and jointly funded. This HEROES project is unique, as it aims to achieve a radical increase in the efficiency of hydrogen production by heat integration and component optimisation. This is a very important project for VTT and leads to improved know-how, modelling tools, and research infra.
