Metrology support for carbon capture utilisation and storage

Project: EU project

Project Details

Description

Metrology for CCUS to support aims for carbon neutral Europe

Carbon capture utilisation and storage (CCUS) is identified as a priority topic to reach EU’s greenhouse gas emission reduction target. CCUS begins by removing CO2 from emissions before release. The gas can then be reused in industry or permanently stored underground or locked in an alternative material. However, CCUS is not 100 % emission-free. Some products will re-emit CO2 over time and leaks may occur from storages. New traceable methods are required to test the performance of new capture technologies, e.g. to reliably monitor leaks and to quantify the re-emission from CCUS products.

Project will develop metrology infrastructure for online monitoring and leak detection of carbon dioxide in energy/industrial processes, transportation pipelines and storage sites, and test suitability of long- and short-term storage materials.

VTT MIKES studies applicability of isotopic measurements to detect leaks from stored CO2 using optical isotopic ratio spectrometer capable of measuring isotopic ratios in atmospheric levels of CO2.
