Pump them out: characterization of fungal transport systems enabling utilization of industrial side streams

Project: Research Council of Finland

Project Details

Description

ABC transporters are membrane proteins working as molecular pumps that move molecules across the biological membranes. They can be found in every living cell. Proper functioning of ABC transporters is crucial for human health. At the same time, they can contribute to drug resistance of microbial pathogens and tumor cells. The proposed project aims at gaining better understanding of biological functions of ABC transporters in filamentous fungi. With that knowledge, we expect to generate novel fungal strains, which would be more suitable for recycling of industrial side streams and by-products. Those strains would allow conversion of wastes into valuable products, such as enzymes or silk-like protein fibers, contributing to the sustainable use of carbon resources.
