Abstract

This paper presents a modular concept to realize very flexible and controllable robotized isles of automation. It is a concept for production and manufacturing of short series production. The concept is utilizing possibilities of modern technology so that flexibility, adaptivity and reactivity are remarkable increasing from the standard of common automation solutions. Isles of automation will be a kind of extended version from automated production cell. Isles of automation include (mechanical and electrical) hardware, software and communication solutions. We describe requirements and solutions for these components in this paper. Also we review some of the current enabling technologies for short series production and present architecture for software components. Some of the presented technologies are based on current or upcoming standards and are exploited in the research work.
