Abstract
A device that includes a scanning unit and a control unit communicatively connected to each other. The is configured to be fixed to a vehicle and generate a point cloud that has a field of view around a point of origin located in the scanning unit. The control unit is configured to receive the point cloud and extract from it at least a first group of points that represent at least one selected region of a surface supporting the vehicle. The control unit is further configured to determine a tilt of the vehicle from said first group of points and create a compensated point cloud where coordinates of the points are adjusted by compensating the effect of the tilt. The control unit is configured to detect one or more objects of interest for steering functions from the compensated point cloud.
