    Abstract

This thesis deals with application understanding in software maintenance. It describes how hypertext can be used to support software maintenance. Numerous authors have discussed the importance of software maintenance. It is known that understanding of the maintained software is one of the most complex and time-consuming tasks during software maintenance. Hypertext is a technique known for its ability to support information management. This thesis proposes hypertext as support for application understanding, using specially developed hypertext tools. The tools are part of an application understanding toolset developed during the Application Management Environments and Support (AMES) project. The case study using these tools, described in this thesis, is based on on-board space software, METEGG, developed by Space Systems Finland, Ltd.
