Abstract

The varying composition of chlorinated biphenyl mixtures (PCBs) in various matrices poses several difficulties for their quantitation. This work describes a proposal for the quantitation of PCBs on the basis of nine signal congeners. The selected signal compounds include Cl2 - Cl8 chlorinated congeners and they can be used in evaluating the PCB content of food, environmental and occupational samples. The detection is carried out by gas chromatography using an electron capture or mass selective detector. Model chromatograms of several commercial PCB mixtures are given.
