A new algorithm for image segmentation based on region growing and edge detection

Abstract

A novel image segmentation technique is presented which combines region growing, edge detection, and a novel edge preserving smoothing algorithm. The combined method helps to avoid characteristic segmentation errors which occur when using region growing or edge detection separately. The method is applied to segment MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) images for subsequent 3D visualization, and experimental results are presented.
