Abstract

In atmospheric sampling, a preconcentration step is often necessary to raise the concentration of the pollutants above the sensitivity level of the detecting apparatus. During the work period at IMG-TNO, a thermal desorption cold-trap (TCT) unit was fitted up. The TCT unit was built (by Frans Schulting) for preparation of on solid sorbent material concentrated samples for further analysis. The optimum settings for efficient desorption as well as for cooling and heating of the cold-trap were tested. The desorption efficiency of the instrument was at least 95 %. No cold spots or dead points were observed where the sample compounds could condensate and remain. The TUT unit did neither cause any peak broadening or separation problems. The developed technique was applied to ambient air and automobile exhaust analysis.
