Abstract
A sensor is described for the continuous monitoring of sheet flutter in paper machines, employing a method in which the momentary transverse position of the measurement point on the travelling paper web is extracted from alterations in the time-of-flight of light pulses. Sub-millimetre resolution (0.2 mm with a signal bandwidth of 200 Hz) is attained by using a very high pulse repetition rate (1.3 MHz), high speed automatic gain control electronics and an analog time-to-amplitude converter. The sensor has a separate optomechanical sensing head at the end of a 20 m optical cable, enabling measurement in demanding industrial environments.
