Abstract

This thesis surveys end-to-end quality of service (QoS) monitoring, which provides valuable information concerning the level of service quality received by applications especially in asymmetric cellular networks. A QoS measurement tool called QoSMeT is presented. QoSMeT can be used to monitor end-to-end QoS of networking applications such as VoIP clients. Installation of QoSMeT to both communicating end points enables the real-time measurement of one-way QoS metrics. The monitoring is premised on the measurement of application traffic in both end points, exchange of the measured information between peers and calculation of QoS measurements based on this information. Experimental evaluation of QoSMeT's performance and a demonstration in heterogeneous network environment were conducted in this study. The evaluation measurements prove QoSMeT performs the measurement calculations as required while the limits to the operation are also discovered. The results indicate that QoSMeT suits the intended use and can be deployed in different network environments.
