Abstract
In the presentation the main environmental effects of wintertime
shipping is addressed. Results from ac-cident statistics analysis in the
Baltic Sea is used as a baseline for evaluating the risks in shipping traffic.
One way to reduce the emissions is to have an efficient system for ship
routing. In the presentation the system used in the Baltic Sea is presented as
an example of an operational fleet management tool that uses modern
technology (satellite images and AIS position information) to help the
icebreakers organise their assistance operations and advise the ships in an
optimal way.
