    Abstract

An innovative object-oriented approach to chemical process design is introduced and formalized as the SHE conscious process design methodology. Inclusion of the model of environment in the process model makes SHE issues a natural part of the process model and the concern of SHE issues an integral part process design. The use of the methodology is illustrated by a real-life case of designing a layout of a hazardous chemical storage and pumping system. The limitations of the traditional way of modelling process design are indicated.
