Abstract

A paper machine analyzer and a rotogravure test printing machine was installed at VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland during 2001. Trials in pilot scale and in production scale constitute an important part in production development. The differences between the trial papers are determined by various quality criteria. With printing papers, printability is an important quality parameter. Usually, because of the high investment cost of gravure printing machines, most evaluations in the industry for gravure papers are done based on traditional paper measurements. However at VTT the rotogravure printing machine prints from reel to reel, which enables the print trial points to be even hundreds of meters long. This completely new type of research service is based on natural paper variation, maximizing the statistical scope of the results.
