Abstract
An on-chip antenna comprises an array of radiating elements (302) arranged on a first surface of a planar substrate (301) to radiate electromagnetic radiation (303) at a frequency in a range from about 100 GHz to 1 THz, and an radiation extraction coating (300) arranged on an opposite surface of the planar substrate (301), wherein a thickness and a refractive index of the radiation extraction coating (300) are selected such that the electromagnetic radiation (303) reflected from an interface between the planar substrate (301) and the radiation extraction coating (300) and the electromagnetic radiation (303) reflected from an interface between the radiation extraction coating (300) and a surrounding medium (304) are minimized, and are substantially out of phase and cancel each other in the substrate at least partially, resulting in a higher extraction of the electromagnetic radiation (303) to the surrounding medium (304).
