Abstract

This paper describes a series of model tests carried out on caisson type Arctic structures. The tests were conducted to determine ice forces induced on a vertical sided structure and to observe the rubble field formation. The ice load tests were performed on an aluminium model, consisting of a caisson and the berm corresponding to a scale of 1:50, leading to a width of 2.4 m for the caisson and 6.0 m for the berm. During testing, the forces exerted by the ice on the berm and caisson were measured by a set of shear strain gauges. The magnitudes of both vertical and horizontal ice force records were obtained for different ice conditions.
