title = "Analysis of large-scale mine automation system using HAZOP",
abstract = "Tele-operated machines and production systems with autonomously moving machines are no longer machines. They are production systems with control rooms and production areas. The automation system controls functions and movements that can risks and dangers. There is a need for new approach and analysis methods for wireless control and data transmission systems to ensure the safe operation, maintenance and repair of highly automated machinery. VTT Automation has been implementing safety analysis methods and analysis tools for highly automated production systems designers, machine manufactures and system end-users. In our approach we define the safety related control functions so that they include operator's actions, control equipment, communication networks, wireless data transmission links and the machine onboard control systems. The whole functions are then analysed with the Hazard and Operability study (HAZOP). In this case study the HAZOP analysis was carried out in three levels, which were system level, application level and signal level. The method of a HAZOP study as well as experiences of analysing a large-scale mine automation application is presented.",
