Abstract
In this paper, we propose a smart directional antenna with a reduced hardware complexity. We introduce also an adjacent power pattern ratio (APPR) direction of arrival (DoA) estimation algorithm for the smart antenna. The algorithm is demonstrated in a real world indoor environment and the estimated DoA results are in good agreement with the predicted angles. DoA estimation results show that the APPR algorithm with the proposed antenna can be a valuable solution to improve the performance of the wireless communication in the next generation systems where spectrum reuse, interference avoidance, as well as device localization are of special interest.
