Abstract
Industrial work is undergoing significant transformation. In the future, employees will collaborate with advanced technologies and artificial intelligence (AI) within complex, multidisciplinary teams. This study explores the potential of advanced technologies – specifically AI assistants and smart glasses – to enhance the meaningfulness of work and support information flow in industrial environments. Using a qualitative case study approach, five factory employees performed a task with both technologies. Data was collected through observation, interviews and questionnaires. Results indicate that both technologies were positively received, with smart glasses especially valued for enabling real-time remote support and fostering collaboration. The AI assistant was appreciated for its structured guidance and rapid report generation, though its speech interface required more familiarisation. Both technologies were seen to support learning, professional development and knowledge sharing, contributing to a sense of purpose and confidence at work. However, concerns were raised regarding trust in AI-provided information, the impact on autonomy and potential information security issues. Ergonomic and technical challenges were also identified, particularly with smart glasses. The findings highlight the importance of human-centred design and careful consideration of work content, interaction, sense of belonging, learning and autonomy when implementing emerging technologies in industrial settings to preserve and enhance the meaningfulness of work. The findings of this study can be utilised in the design of new technologies for industrial work environments.
