    Abstract

The service evaluated in this field study aims to reduce the number of reindeer accidents by real-time warnings. Drivers participating in the study receive warnings on reindeer on or near the road by a smart phone installed in the vehicle. The service also informs the drivers and participating companies on especially accident prone areas via the Internet. This study assesses the acceptance of the warning service and its potential impacts on driver behaviour, foresight and traffic safety. Based on the results an estimate of the possibilities to reduce the amount of reindeer accidents with a broad implementation of the service will be provided. The effects on efficiency of transportation and environment will be addressed as well.
