Abstract

During the last ten years several large-span underground caverns have been completed in Finland with span widths over 30 tn. In Luikonlahti mine a stoping area is located around a shaft direct above a major fault. In Turku a bedrock air-raid shelter complex is completed with two ice-hockey rinks in the shelter halls for peace time use. The planning, construction and performance of these are discussed and stoping results compared with the expected ones. A synthesis is made on the similarities and differencies in the planning and construction of mining and civil engineering large-span underground openings in Finland.
