Abstract
This paper concentrates on studying the latest cellular network technologies in connection with distribution grid protection and fault location applications. It introduces recent 5G deployment options and their state through performance and QoS tests in two commercial mobile operators’ networks. The tests are performed with line differential relays, merging units, and substation protection and control device in a closed loop real-time simulation environment. Connectivity to a cellular 5G network is established with commercial 5G routers and devices. The communication performance and reliability are assessed using dedicated software tools.
