    Abstract

The influence of machine, base paper, and coating properties on precoated paper coverage, coated with a metered size press (MSP), was investigated. The properties investigated were MSP roll hardness, machine speed, nip load, coating color pigment ratio, solids content of the color, coat weight, filler amount of the base paper, and hydrophobicity of the paper. A multivariate analysis program was used to setup the trial parameters and to analyze the results. Coating coverage was evaluated through the use of back scattered electron (BSE) coverage and laser induced plasma spectroscopy (LIPS).
