Abstract

The combination of elementary hardening mechanisms at room temperature in a quenched and tempered, secondary hardening Cr-Mo-V steel has been studied. The effect of single parameters per se, and their superposition, have been studied for dislocation processes up to yield point.

The results show that the temperature independent component of the yield strength can be solely attributed to the dislocation density. The effect of fine carbide dispersion is included in that of the dislocation density. Using values given in the literature the temperature independent component of yield strength can be derived also as a function of the cell size and particle hardening or solely as a result of packet boundary strengthening, but microstructural observations do not support these alternatives. The temperature dependent component of yield strength is shown to be due to the ferrite lattice itself and also partly due to cell boundaries or solution hardening.

Finally, a dislocation model for yielding is presented according to which the main dislocation sources are the dislocation segments locked by small carbides inside the cells and laths.
