Abstract
The article reviews the different operating modes of wind turbines, together with a number of possible generator systems and their impact on wind turbine technology. Variable-speed generator systems have yielded promising results, producing an annual energy output of 4 to 6% higher than a constant-speed system. The design of both the drive train and the tower are also affected by the generator system.
