Abstract

Special Interest Events (SIEs) are important for the renewal of regional tourist destinations and their economic growth but there is a lack of empirical research on the expenditures of different types of consumers attending different types of events. Using a complex service product (CSP) model of demand for SIEs, we provide new insights into the types of consumers attracted to events and marked differences in the expenditure of these consumer types on different services. Our results demonstrated that SIEs stand out in terms of consumer expenditure. Of note is the daily expenditure of young men and young women in the company of friends. These preliminary results offer important insights and have implications for regional policy makers and event organizers.
