Abstract

The bark losses due to unwanted debarking in mechanised cuttings are estimated to correspond to 2 TWh of energy. Therefore actions to decrease peeling and reroute bark to energy production is important. In addition, peeling of bark causes damages to the surface layers of industrial roundwood lowering therefore its added value. Bark's peeling is at its highest during the sap season when it is approximately three times higher compared to the rest of the year. This projects aim is to decrease the level of bark's peeling in cutting done by a single grip harvester significantly. To achieve this goal, the level of bark's peeling and its characteristics were determined in different season. Also mechanics of delimbing knives knot-cutting process were studied. It was found that lowering of delimbing knives' pressure to one third of its normal values reduced the unwanted debarking most significantly. Also decrease in feeding rolls' pressure had a similar effect.
