Abstract

Undulators and wigglers are special devices used in synchrotron radiation research laboratories for generating and controlling the properties of radiation. This work describes a generic control system for such insertion devices. The main function is to control the gap value of undulators or wigglers, since this gap provides the way to tune up the radiation. The system functions are distributed in a feasible way so that a good compromise is achieved between the ease of use, the ease of maintenance, system expansion, and cost. The system is based on the so called client/server architecture and an Ethernet network is used for transferring user commands to a server computer, which accomplishes the control action through an optical field control bus.
