Abstract

The radical changes in the European Building Industry due to harmonisation of the technical requirements and increased international competition will provide an opportunity to establish timber building technology as a competitive alternative to other building systems on the market. The main task of COST Action E5: Timber Frame Building Systems is to co-ordinate this research on European level. COST Action is also to create contacts between research institutions and to promote communication between research and practice. Workshops arranged by COST Action E5 aim at identifying potential areas to initiate collaborative research programs and commercial joint ventures. This one and half day Workshop on Fire Safety of Medium-Rise Timber Frame Residential Buildings was presented as a series of co-ordinated topics covering various aspects of fire safety. Special emphasis was put on fire risk assessment methods and developments in fire safety regulations.
