Damping with multimaterial technology

Abstract

This report reviews the state-of-the-art passive damping technology with special reference to materials, their dissimilar combinations and corresponding joints in the multimaterial products. Basic concepts of damping and its importance on the overall properties of a product are introduced. General mechanisms of damping and the possibilities for enhancing damping are discussed. Furthermore, potential future developments in the field are highlighted. The report is intended to show the potential of multimaterial technology on the improvement of damping and to identify the needs and targets for future R & D efforts in this field.
