Abstract
In co-operation with the University of Helsinki and the University of Joensuu, VTT has developed starch based non-mineral paper pigments to replace mineral pigments. Pilot scale coating and filler trials were performed at the Western Michigan University pilot facilities. Coating results with developed starch pigments show that the novel non-mineral pigments have a potential to give good surface properties for coated paper grades. The filler trials show that paper strength properties can be improved without having an influence on other paper properties.
