Abstract

The properties of urea phosphate were considered in a literature review and new experimental results were reported for the use of urea phosphate as a main component in durable and non-durable fire retardant finishing of cotton textiles. The add-one neccesary for and effects on textile and burning properties of fabrics after finishing and 20 - 50 detergent washings were investigated. The reactions of urea phosphate finishing composition with cellulose fibres were studied by using DSC and chemical analysis. Process optimisation results in durable textile finishing were reported. The correlation between char length and oxygen index in different burning tests of textiles was presented. The burning behaviour of pressure impregnated pine wood laminates with urea phosphate were also examined for the use of laminates as flame retardant building materials. Toxicity studies carried out by using pure urea phosphate showed that it can be considered as a non-toxic and non-mutagenic compound.
