Abstract
To stay competitive, a more efficient utilization of fiber material is needed in the future, because new types of fibers are taken to use from biorefineries, and new fiber applications are developed, for example, new methods for forming fiber networks, use of fibers in reinforcing bioplastic composites etc. Therefore better and more versatile characterization methods are needed better to understand the processability of pulps, changes in pulps during the process, and to get a deeper understanding of the factors affecting paper, board and composite properties. The available commercial fiber analyzers enable statistically significant measurements with little manual work and provide a huge number of parameters per measurement. In addition to average values, also parameter distributions are obtained. From an earlier study with 14 different pulps including chemical pulps, mechanical pulps and recycled fibers, 6 different pulps were selected to be investigated in alkaline surrounding to find out additional information caused e.g. by fiber wall swelling and dissolving of hemicelluloses. Especially the effects on fiber shape (curl index) and fiber length were studied, and special focus was directed on the rarely used property combinations such as 2D- and 3D distribution maps provided by STFI Fibermaster (TM).
