    Abstract

The aim of the research project, EcoGrad, was to develop a concept for ecological housing areas that would fit in St Petersburg. In this report the EcoGrad concept is defined and the criteria list for the concept is presented. The results of a questionnaire that was made to inhabitants in Russia was utilised in this work. The project included three pilot residential areas locating in St Petersburg. A rough city plan was drawn and different energy systems were modeled and calculated. Also emissions of energy production scenarios were calculated. In addition, suitable public private partnership business models were studied. Based on findings from the pilot studies and negotiations with the local authorities, a criteria list for an ecological city plan was made, presented, and iterated. The EcoGrad concept consists of many aspects, which are: dense structure of the urban area, local environment and basis, energy efficient buildings, energy production mainly from renewable energy sources, sustainable transportation solutions, waste and water management and social issues.
