Abstract
One measure of the Bioeconomy Strategy 2022–2035 is to increase the added value of livelihoods based on ecosystem services. In order to get an overall picture, information was needed, especially about value chains that are not yet established on the market or for which weak or outdated information is available on valuation.
With the help of research literature, interviews, online surveys, company information and workshops, the potential to add value in businesses based on the health effects of nature and adventure tours was analyzed. The project also analyzed biomasses for which potential for increasing added value was identified.
In the analyzed companies in the agricultural, reed, natural non-wood products and health sectors, the value added in relation to turnover was estimated to be approximately 40 percent on average. Based on Statistics Finland’s business data and the turnover estimates made in the project, the ratio was the best in the reed business and in the guided hikes and adventure tours that are still under development in the tourism industry.
There are enough ecosystem services available to meet the needs of companies, so there is potential to increase added value. However, in order to do this, more detailed information about the market is needed.
Consumer research, business research and productization, new types of certificates and credits, and research into the co-production of ecosystem services can speed up the increase of the added value of the bioeconomy. With economic and informational guidance and the networking of companies, the market can be developed in the desired direction.
