Abstract
This chapter examines the environmental and economic aspects of utilizing lignin in more valuable applications, demonstrating its potential to enhance the sustainability of biorefineries and green industries. Lignin is the second most common biopolymer found in nature, but up until now, it has mostly been burned as a low-value fuel. Thanks to new methods for extracting and transforming lignin, like deep eutectic solvents and electrocatalytic techniques, we are now able to use it for much more, including producing bio-based chemicals, advanced materials, and even components for energy storage. This chapter also explores studies that measure the full life cycle and economic impact of these new lignin-based products, highlighting that they can significantly cut down greenhouse gas emissions and reduce our reliance on fossil fuels. Real-life examples from industry show that it’s possible to successfully bring these ideas to market. However, the discussion also covers the technical hurdles, regulations, and market barriers that still need to be addressed before lignin valorization can be widely adopted. By bringing together viewpoints from science, industry, and policy, the chapter offers practical recommendations for anyone interested in advancing lignin’s use. It underscores lignin’s potential to help meet climate targets, support circular bioeconomy initiatives, and strengthen industrial competitiveness.
